The reason why is because of they need this number of muscles to make their trunks strong enough to lift heavy food. They can lift things that weigh up to 317,514 kilograms!

The reason why is because they have the ability to stay buoyant, use their trunk as a snorkel when swimming and can use their strong legs to paddle through the water. These help them swim excellently unlike all large land animals except the hippopotamus.
