Did you know the scales on a pangolin are made of keratin?

Just like many animals who have keratin in their horns, hooves etc., the scales on a pangolin are made of keratin(a structural protein that forms cells that make up the tissue into nails for humans, hooves for ungulates, horns for horned animals etc.). Isn’t that amazing?

Now, why are the scales on a pangolin are made of keratin?

The reason why is that keratin is thick so when in danger, the pangolin can roll into a ball and defend itself with the scales which can hold off predators.

They might not look stinky, but pangolins are some of the smelliest creatures on Earth. Isn’t that amazing?

The reason is because they have a smelly fluid used to chase away predators.

3. Some species have prehensile tails!

Did you know some species have prehensile tails?

Even though some pangolin species can’t climb, some species have prehensile(capable of grabbing) tails. Isn’t that overwhelming?

Now, why do some species have prehensile tails?

Because they can’t chew, they swallow stones to grind the insects they eat. Isn’t that amazing?

The reason why is because they can’t chew so in their stomachs the stones grind the insects.

5. Pangolins have no teeth.

Now, why do pangolins have no teeth?

The reason why is that it has a stomach which the pangolin fills with stones to grind insects and it has a long sticky tongue to pick up insects.
