- 📷List of apex predators (30 examples) – In Pictures
All parts of the world are filled with animals and in each place, there is always a food chain. In the food chain, there are always predators like lions but even predators need to watch their backs. Only the apex predators are the ones with no stress. I’ve listed 30 examples of apex predators below, but before that let’s see what an apex predator is.
What is an apex predator?
An apex predator is known as any animal at the top of the food chain in their habitat. They always have strength, speed and intelligence. Below I have 30 apex predators listed out. I’m sure one of them will surprise you.
1. Lions.🦁
The lion is a large, muscular cat with a length of 8.2 feet, height of 4 feet and weight of 250 kilograms making it the second largest cat on Earth. The lion has a bite force of about 650-1000 PSI(pounds per square inch) and a speed of 81 kilometers per hour(kph)/50 miles per hour(mph). The lion belongs to the family of cats called Felidae and is in a subfamily of cats called Pantherine along with tigers, leopards, jaguars and snow leopards. This animal can eat anything from rodents and African buffalo to hippos and giraffes but they predominately(often) feed on medium sized hoofed animals like zebras, wildebeests and gazelles. The scientific name of a lion is Panthera leo.
Features that makes a lion an apex predator
Features that makes a lion an apex predator are listed below.
Size: For most animals like the lion, size is important. So the bigger the lion is, the harder it will be for any animal to kill.
Strength: Just like size, strength is important for survival. A lion is extremely strong with a maximum bite force of 1000 PSI and the ability to hit with 1300 pounds of pressure with a paw swipe which is strong enough to break bones. So with such strength, a lion can defend itself and also kill many animals for prey.
Intelligence: The lion is incredibly smart which is something it needs to be able to catch prey.
Teamwork: Unlike most predators, lions live and hunt in groups called prides. This increases the chance of catching prey and being safe from animals that try to overtake them.
Speed: Lions need to be fast to run after prey and cover more ground quickly when going to patrol his territory.
2. Killer whales/Orcas.
The orca or killer whale is a species of toothed whale with a length of 22 feet and weight of 4,000 kilograms making it the second largest predator on Earth. They belong to the dolphin family of which orcas are the biggest. An orca has a bite force of about 19000 PSI(pounds per square inch) and a speed of 56 kilometers per hour(kph)/28` miles per hour(mph). The scientific name of a killer whale is Orcinus orca.
